This month we catch up with Jennifer Shen as she shares how the sports, clubs and rigorous academic program at St. John’s helped prepare her for success.

What college did you attend after High School?

Seattle University, with a degree in Sociology

Where do you currently work?

I work at Prestige Automobiles, Guam in the Marketing Department.

What activities do you enjoy outside of work?

Soccer, Basketball and Dancing

What do you love the most about your job?

My favorite thing about my job is putting on events. It’s fast-paced and requires a lot of coordination with vendors, partners and colleagues. But I love the high energy task of this part of my job.

How has attending St. John’s prepared you for success in College and in the workplace?

St. John’s prepared me to be able to take on challenges and face them with ease. Going to school there was very high pressure due to the high and rigorous academic program. So when I went to school and now working full-time I am able to manage high-stress situations quite well. I was used to the fast-paced environment and prioritizing my task lists.

What courses/instructors did you enjoy the most while attending St. John’s?

I’ve always enjoyed my English classes because I enjoy reading a lot and Art class was definitely another favorite. The instructor that left an imprint on me from St. John’s was Mrs. Hull, she reached out to me in times of need on an academic and personal level.

What experiences from St. John’s are the most memorable?

My sports career in basketball and soccer, being a part of Glee club, a high-pressure academic environment, and the lunch buffets my friends and I had every day.

What words of encouragement or advice can you share with current St. John’s high school students?

You may not realize it now, but the experiences now will definitely influence who you become. From joining clubs or volunteering and putting yourself out of your comfort zone and learning or doing something new to playing sports and learning what it means to be a team to the high pressure environment that will teach you to prioritize and be able to face what challenges come your way.
