4th  Asia  Pacific  Conference  of  Young  Scientists (APCYS)  Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The Asian Pacific Conference of Young Scientists (APCYS 2015) was hosted by the Royal Military College and held at the International Youth Centre in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.  The APCYS aim to promote and encourage young students to be curious in science and embark on scientific research. 60 projects from 8 different countries were presented, and students displayed their research in the form of both Poster Presentations and Oral Presentations in the categories of Life Science, Environmental Science, Physics, Mathematics and Computer Science.  An international jury determined the awards with approximately 60% of the projects earning medals of Gold, Silver and Bronze.  Nine St. John’s students presented their research in Poster and Oral Presentations with each student earning at least one medal.

In the Life Science category
Anna Yi and Yurou (Maggie) Zeng earned a Gold medal for their poster presentation and a Gold medal for their oral presentation for their research on “Electricity Effectivity:  The Affect of Electricity on Escherichia coli”.
Noah Sablan and Isabella Yu earned a Silver medal for their oral presentation and a Bronze medal for their poster presentation for their research on “Antibacterial Activity of Plant Extracts on Bacteria”.
Davin Yang and Allison Zhang earned a Bronze medal for their poster presentation for their research on “Programming Lytic Bacteriophages to Sensitize Antibiotic-Resistant Strains of Bacteria”.
In the Environmental Science category
Veronica Chua earned a Gold medal for her oral presentation and a Bronze medal for her poster on her research on “The Repellent Effects of Acalypha indica on Oryctes rhinoceros (CRB)”.
Bella Moon earned a Bronze medal for her oral presentation on her research on “Producing Hand Sanitizers Using Essential Oils as Antimicrobial Agents”.
Joohyun Jeon earned a Bronze medal for her oral presentation for her research on “Effects of Different Pesticidal Substances on Fire Ants”.
