We are delighted to announce the appointment of Mrs. Michelle Untalan as St. John’s new Assistant Head of School for the Lower School and Mr. Bob Kelley as the new Assistant Head of School for the Middle and Upper School, effective July 1, 2016.
Michelle Untalan is no stranger to the St. John’s community, having been a student herself at St. John’s and an educator in the lower school for 15 years.
Michelle is currently a doctoral degree candidate (ABD) and possesses two graduate degrees, a Masters Degree in Special Education from the University of Guam and a Masters Degree in Adult Education from the University of San Diego. Her Bachelor of Arts is in Business Communication from the University of Portland. She has over 25 years of experience in education, having served approximately 10 years in a public education system and 15 years at St. John’s School.
At the start of the 2016 school year, she is excited to assume her new role as Assistant Head of School in the Lower School.
“In my new position I’ll be able to work with lower school teachers together as a group. Prior to this, I worked with teachers individually addressing different aspects of curriculum and teaching techniques. Now I’ll be able to work with all of them, share best practices, ideas, and approaches among the group.
This will also benefit the new teachers by sharing the expertise and experience of our long-time teachers, and it will allow the newer teachers to share observations and ideas with our established teachers.”
Throughout the past 19 years, Kelley has worked with students in Washington D.C., Philadelphia, rural New Hampshire and Guam. He has a master’s degree in secondary education from the University of Pennsylvania and his contacts and experience with colleges and universities across the United States and overseas provide a valuable asset for our families.
“I am excited that my new role at the school will be to support the Head of School in offering the best possible educational experience for our students and families. I will be working with the faculty in the Upper and Middle Schools to ensure that we are able to inspire the students to reach further and higher. I will also be working very closely with the new College Counselor to make certain that program continues to bring about the great results that we have experienced in recent years.
St. John’s is delighted to have Mrs. Untalan and Mr. Kelley lead us in the role of Assistant Heads of School. Please join us in welcoming and wishing them the best in their new roles.
