On January 21, a team of St. John’s Middle School students participated in Guam’s First LEGO League (FLL) Pacific Championship at the Micronesian Mall. Coordinated by SIFA Guam and Guam’s Rotary Club, this robotics “coopertition” is designed to promote students’ interests in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, & Math (STEAM). The students are members of the school’s first Robotic’s Club and have been working on this year’s challenge since August.
The challenge consisted of several events: the Robot Game, the Project, and the Core Values. In the Robot Game, the club’s robot was programmed to score as many points as possible on a robot obstacle course. For the Project, the students presented an original solution to a real life science problem: Guam’s Rhinoceros Beetle infestation. Finally, the team worked together to overcome a surprise Core Values challenge. St. John’s did well for it’s first effort, placing in the top 6 for two of the categories.
