In observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the St. John’s School Chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS) portrayed the spirit of giving back to the community by volunteering at Guam Animals in Need (GAIN) in Yigo last January 20 and 21. GAIN is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the care of all animals on Guam. The student volunteers cared for the sheltered cats and dogs by cleaning and sanitizing their lodging, feeding them, and walking the dogs.
Ms. Chellette San Nicolas and Mrs. Jane Shiu, advisors of St. John’s NHS, hope that the students understand that the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. is not just about civil rights, but also about service to the community. They added that as NHS members and St. John’s Knights, the mission of service above “self” is ultimately the heart of the message of MLK Day.
