Hundreds of early risers laced up their running shoes and participated in the St. John’s 11th Annual “Healthy Minds, Healthy Bodies” Family Fun Run. This PTA hosted event was held on Saturday, March 16, 2019 at the Governor Joseph Flores Memorial Park (Ypao Beach). This year, the organizers added a 2K race to accommodate younger participants and for those who are interested in running a shorter distance. The 5K run kicked off at 6:00 a.m. followed by the 2K at 6:15 a.m.
Surpassing their goal, PTA was able to raise close to $35,000, a 63% increase from previous year. Proceeds from this event will provide additional classroom tools and resources in the form of teacher grants. Moreover, there was an increase in registered runners from under 500 to about 800.
In support of the Clean Water Guam Initiative, runners were encouraged to bring their own refillable water bottles on race day as water refilling stations were available before and after the race.
Awards were given to the overall male and female finishers and the top 3 male and female finishers in each division. Light refreshments were served after the race and raffle prizes were given out to lucky drawn winners.
The lower school classes with the highest percentage of students who signed up, received an Amazon credit/gift card to purchase items of their choice for their classroom. Congratulations to the following classes for tying for first place with 100% student registrants and winning the $300 Amazon gift cards: Mrs. Daisy Schwartz’s Pre-K3 class, Mrs. Anna Liza Ganeb’s Pre-K4 class, Mrs. Jen Muña’s PK-4 class, Ms. Sara Manibusan’s 1st grade class, Mrs. Clarissa Alvarez’s 2nd grade class and Ms. Kay Yamashita’s 4th grade. For middle and upper school, the 10th grade class won first place with 50% of the class signing up, followed by the juniors with 46% and 6th grade with 44%. They received a $300, $200 and $150 Amazon gift card, respectively.
