IYSIE 2019

Congratulations to six of our St. John’s students who garnered top awards in the 2019 International Young Scientists Innovation Exhibition (IYSIE) held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on July 8-12, 2019. This event was organized by the Malaysia Young Scientist Organization (MYSO).

The competition welcomed students from over 15 countries including Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, the Philippines, Taiwan, Guam, Sri Lanka, Korea, Nepal, and India, to name a few. Participants had the opportunity to exchange ideas with one another and more than 200 innovative research projects focusing on this year’s theme, “Innovation Enriches Humanism”, were showcased. Projects were classified into 5 categories: Environmental Sciences, Physics and Engineering, Life Sciences, Computer Sciences and Mathematics.

The following students have participated and placed in their respective categories:

Seungho “Sunny” Kang – Silver medal
Exhibition – Environmental Sciences
“The Study of Ralstonia Picketii – Abundant Bacteria in Guam as Indicators of Metal Ions”

 Sukyung “Sunny” Tae – Silver medal
Exhibition – Environmental Sciences
“The Values and Efficiencies of Solar Energy”

 Elizabeth Chua – Silver medal
Conference – Environmental Sciences
“A Comparative Analysis of Blade Design on the Efficiency of a Wind Turbine”

Derrick Yen – Silver medal
Conference – Physics and Engineering
“The Differences Between Photovoltaic, Thermal, and Hybrid Photovoltaic-Thermal Generators”

Alexander Gayle – Bronze medal
Conference – Life Sciences
“How Different Ratios of Potassium and Salt Attract Mosquitoes”

The students were accompanied by St. John’s science teachers, Mrs. Arlene Chua and Mrs. Christine McCormic.
