St. John’s School high school sophomore, Kasey Xu, won third place in her age group at the Chopin Plus Online International Piano Competition. The competition was organized by Artistic Association “Porta Musicae” and Primary and Secondary Bronisław Rutkowski School of Music in Kraków, Poland. This year, participants submitted video recordings of the performance due to the epidemiological situation of the COVID-19 pandemic. Through the online format, the aspiring musicians were able to safely participate in the event, and still have a diverse musical interpretation from pianists from various parts around the world.
Participants were categorized based on their age: I group – born after 2010; II group – born in years 2008 – 2010; III group – born in years 2005 – 2007; IV group – born in years 2002-2004; V group – No age limit.
The competition required two pieces for the submission, one is a piece composed by F. Chopin, and the other, a piece by a composer of the candidate’s country.
For the competition, Xu performed F. Chopin: Ballade No. 2 in F major, Op. 38, and Robert Muczynski: Prelude Op. 6 No. 6. The passionate pianist has put in dedication and diligence into this competition despite the pandemic.
The virtual piano competition was held in September and results were announced in October.
Congratulations Kasey on your well-deserved achievement!
