Seventh grader, HoYoung (Grace) Kang, received an award for the VFW Patriot’s Pen Patriotic Essay Writing Competition. She was selected as the first-place winner of VFW Post 1509, VFW District Six DPA, and VFW Department of Pacific Areas, collectively.
The theme for this year’s essay writing contest was “What is Patriotism to Me?” The Patriot’s Pen is a nationwide, VFW-sponsored youth essay competition that gives 6th to 8th grade students an opportunity to write essays expressing their views on an annual patriotic theme.
Kang is the first student on Guam to receive the prize at three districts, concurrently. The seventh grader received a certificate and a $700 award.
Update (4/6/2021): Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. announced the 2020-21 Patriot’s Pen National Award Winners. Kang, who represented the VFW Department of Pacific, was awarded the $500 Peter J. Mascetti Jr. & Department of Europe Award.
