St. John’s Glee Club Hosts Online Benefit Concert

In honor of National Child Abuse Prevention Month, the St. John’s Glee Club held a special benefit concert to raise funds for Erica’s House, Inc. The concert was showcased virtually via Zoom on three separate dates, April 23, 24, and 25.

Denise Sarmiento, Glee Club president, and the club officers were determined to create activities to keep the club active. Apart from the weekly chapel videos, they felt that they were capable of doing more. Ultimately, they decided to use their talents and love for music for a greater cause, a benefit concert for Erica’s House, Inc.

Online concertgoers enjoyed an hour of musical renditions performed by St. John’s exceptional glee club members. The concert kicked off with a group acappella of “Lux Aurumque”. Smaller group and solo performances followed, including, “This Is Me” from the hit movie the Greatest Showman, “Higher” from the Broadway musical Allegiance, “Edelweiss” from the Sound of Music, “Let Us Adore You” featured in Steven Universe: The Movie, and “When Will My Life Begin” from Disney’s Tangled, to name a few. The concert concluded with the Glee Club singing to the St. John’s Fly Red and White.

Admission to the online concert was free, but viewers were encouraged to donate. 100% of the proceeds were donated Erica’s House, Inc., Guam’s only family visitation center. “I believe their mission statement of providing a safe space for children affected by violence and other related family-oriented services is one that people should consistently be aware of and support in order for us to create a safe environment on our small island,” said Sarmiento.

The club president thanked the parents, teachers and general viewers for taking the time to watch and support the concert. “I am glad that our members’ efforts in creating and editing their video performances were seen by the public for a great cause,” she expressed. Sarmiento further thanked her fellow Glee officers, Elizabeth Chua and Rachel Seo for their teamwork in efficiently organizing the entirety of the concert; Mr. Norman Babia and Ms. Joy Miralles for helping edit the group performances; and Glee Club advisor, Mrs. Arlene Chua for her guidance throughout the whole process and ensuring the concert will be enjoyable for all.
