Justine Xu shines in International Music Competitions

Incoming upper school junior, Justine Xu, has had an eventful year in music thus far. In spite of the global pandemic, Justine has attained various accomplishments in numerous musical competitions. After winning the Absolute First Prize (Platinum Medal) at the 2020-2021 Canadian International Music Competition last December 2020, she participated in additional online international music competitions.

She started her year competing in the Crescendo International Music Competition 2020-2021 in March 2021. Justine was a First Place winner with a perfect score of 30/30, and was praised as “at or near professional level” by the judge. For the competition, she submitted her performance of the First Movement of Violin Concerto in D Minor by Jean Sibelius.

The following month, the young musician participated in the Great Composers Competition — the Music of Eastern Europe in April. She was awarded First Prize of her age group (Group IV) in the 6th Edition of the Music of Eastern Europe. She performed 3rd Movement of Concerto for Violin and Orchestra by Alexei Machavariani for her submission.

In May, Justine was given the highest-level award, the Platinum Medal, with a score of 99/100 at the 2021 Quebec International Music Competition (5th Edition). She was a the top violinist in her age group, 15 and under. Justine submitted her performance of the First Movement of Violin Concerto in D Minor by Jean Sibelius. 

In addition to her winnings at these international competitions, Justine has been accepted to the violin intensive program at Interlochen Center for the Arts this summer. Even with the participation reduced to 50% of the usual enrollment capacity due to COVID protocols, she is among the selected individuals recognized for their musical prowess. She will attend the program in Interlochen, Michigan on June 19th.
