St. John’s third grader, Junesun Kim, recently took first place in the U8 division and ranked 1st in the Cadet category (ages 8 to 12) during the Youth & Cadet Rapid Chess tournament on November 13. Hosted by the Guam Chess Federation, 53 youthful chess players gathered at Agana Shopping Center to participate in the Cadet category of the tournament. A Youth category was also available for participants ages 13 to 18 (U14, U16, U18).
In preparation for the tournament, Junesun received guidance from other local chess players and self-studied by reading books and watching videos. He was rewarded with a trophy and a cash prize.
