This month we catch up with Shanthini (Black) Watson as she shares her love for travel and excitement for opportunities her job as a U.S. diplomat offers.
What did you do in the year following HS Graduation?
Attended University of San Francisco
Can you tell us about the career path you chose after College?
I received a masters degree in Urban Planning and then worked in real estate development of 5 years before returning to Guam and working with environmental planning at the Naval Base. Thereafter, I joined the Foreign Service and currently work as a diplomat. I am currently studying Vietnamese to work at the U.S. Consulate in Ho Chi Minh City as my next assignment.
What do you love most about your job?
I love the opportunity to travel and learn new languages.
Outside of work, what other activities/organizations are you involved in and why?
Outside of work I spend most of my time with my 1.5 year old daughter and my husband, Alex.
Do you still keep in touch with your St. John’s School friends?
Absolutely, they are some of my best friends, more like family.
What experiences from St. John’s are the most memorable?
My experiences outside the classroom are the most memorable – senior skip day, hikes with the hiking club, soccer practice, eating lunch in the halls.
